ABOUT ME
I was born- well, I mean the story is pretty boilerplate for the Midwest. We can skip it.
I'm Maggie, the webmaster of this site, and I hate the internet. To be specific, I hate what the internet has become. Capitalism has sucked the soul out of what was meant to be a tool for endless connection and creativity, turning it into a data mine and advertising platform. We, human beings, are meant to make things, not be sold things, and I found myself increasingly depressed and anxious as the world became more and more "digital." Eventually, after many years of doomscrolling and algorithmic curation, I decided that I had to cut the cord and remove myself from the "web."
This turned into a multi-year slog of breaking various online addictions and relearning many skills. For every app I deleted, I had to detox, but soon I felt my creativity and curiousity begin to come back. To come full nerd circle, I'll quote Frank Herbert- "Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them."
All of this led me here. I still want to connect with people. I still want to share my many, many interests (books, movies, old technology, horror, science fiction,) I just want to do it outside of the product that is social media. Welcome to my site, and all hail the Undernet.
